Fertility clinics help more gay couples have kids

BOSTON (AP) — Fertility clinics have put a new twist on how to make babies: A "two-mom" approach that lets female same-sex couples share the biological role. One woman's eggs are mixed in a lab dish with donor sperm, then implanted in the other woman, who carries the pregnancy.

A New York doctor described 18 of these cases Tuesday at a fertility conference in Boston that featured other research on ways to help same-sex couples have children. Dr. Alan Copperman is medical director of Reproductive Medicine Associates, a New York City clinic that does the "two-mom" approach.

A New York couple — Sarah Marshall, 40, a recruiter for law firms, and Maggie Leigh Marshall, 35, a real estate broker — used it to have their daughter, Graham, now 18 months old. Maggie's eggs were used to make embryos that were implanted in Sarah, and both women are listed as parents on the birth certificate.

18-Foot-Long Deep-Sea Creature Found off California

The staff and kids at a Southern California educational facility got quite a surprise when an 18-foot-long (5.5 meters) serpentlike sea creature washed up near the shore.

While swimming in about 20 feet (5 meters) of water, dive instructor Jasmine Santana saw a large, silvery, slender figure on the sandy bottom on Sunday (Oct. 13). It turned out to be a dead oarfish, a rare animal that is typically found in much deeper waters, said Jeff Chace, with the Catalina Island Marine Institute, which teaches kids about marine science. 

Santana dragged the fish to shore, where the staff took photographs and then put it on ice to show to their students the next day. "The kids were stunned, excited, giggly," Chace told LiveScience's OurAmazingPlanet.

Khmer Rouge trial hears closing statements

Phnom Penh (AFP) - Cambodia's Khmer Rouge trial entered a crucial phase Wednesday with closing statements in the case of former regime leaders accused of masterminding one of the worst horrors of the 20th century.

More than three decades after the country's "Killing Fields" era, the UN-backed court is moving closer to a verdict in the case of "Brother Number Two" Nuon Chea, 87, and ex-head of state Khieu Samphan, 82.

Lawyer Pich Ang, representing victims, described the Khmer Rouge as "one of the most heinous regimes history has ever known".

Led by "Brother Number One" Pol Pot, who died in 1998, the communist Khmer Rouge wiped out up to two million people through starvation, overwork and execution in the late 1970s.

The trial, which began hearing evidence in late 2011, is widely seen as a landmark in the nation's quest for justice.

Afghanistan: UN mission condemns attack on mosque that killed government official

15 October 2013 – The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) today strongly condemned an attack on a mosque, which killed the governor of the Logar Province, Arsala Jamal.

Mr. Jamal was killed this morning when an explosive device, reportedly affixed to a microphone, detonated while he was giving a speech to mark the Muslim holiday of Eid-Ul-Adha, at the central mosque of Pul-i-Alam.

“I am deeply shocked by this killing of a civilian, in a mosque, on one of the holiest days in the Muslim calendar,” said the Secretary-General's Deputy Special Representative for Afghanistan and acting head of UNAMA, Nicholas Haysom.

Cambodians mark anniversary of King's death

On October 15, 2012 - Cambodia's King Father Norodom Sihanouk passed away. He died of a heart attack at the age of 89.

A few days later, tens of thousands of mourners from all over Cambodia lined the road from the airport to the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh to welcome the return of his body. The park in front of the palace became a public site of grieving.

Following tradition, and with due regard for an auspicious date, the funeral ceremony was set for February 1, 2013. An elaborate procession displaying various aspects of Khmer culture took the late King Father from the palace to the Veal Meru crematorium site. Thousands of people lined the streets of the capital to watch.

To mark the first anniversary of the King Father’s passing, a $1.2m bronze statue was inaugurated on October 11, 2013.

The death of Norodom Sihanouk marks the end of an era for Cambodia. After claiming victory in contested elections held in July, Prime Minister Hun Sen maintains a firm grip on the country, presiding over a de-facto one-party state.
