RCAF officer shot dead in Preah Vihear

Military and civilian police are co-operating in an investigation to uncover the identity of the shooter who fatally wounded a military officer in Preah Vihear province on Wednesday night, a military police official said yesterday.

Hong Bun Y, 42, an official in an engineering unit of the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, was gunned down by an unknown assailant at his home in Preah Vihear’s Choam Ksan district, the district’s military police commander Pich Thy told the Post yesterday.

A bullet pierced the victim’s chest, and he died while being transported from his Trapaing Sangkae Kang Lech village home to a military hospital at Preah Vihear temple, Thy said.

“Police are questioning the victim’s family in order to help them discover the identity of the shooter so they can take legal action,” he said. “So far, we have found no clues, but we suspect that this was a case of revenge.”

Colonel Chou Tong An, the commander of the victim’s unit, confirmed that police are investigating the case.

The family of the victim, who worked in an engineering unit, could not be reached for comment yesterday.
