Syrian state television says President Bashar al-Assad has met with international peace envoy Lakhdar Brahimi. The broadcast did not give any additional details about the meeting Sunday in Damascus.
Brahimi, the joint U.N.-Arab special envoy for Syria, has urged both sides in the Syrian crisis to support a cease-fire during the four-day Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha that begins October 26.
The secretaries-general of the U.N. and the Arab League have also called for a cessation of violence during the religious period, to bring an end to the 19-month anti-government uprising.
But the violence continued Sunday in Damascus while Assad and Brahimi were meeting. A car bomb exploded near a police station in Bab Touma, the Christian quarter of Damascus' Old City, killing several people and wounding others.
