Seven sellers of fake shampoo have been detained for questioning at the Kampong Speu provincial police station after being arrested this week while plying their sub-par wares at the Chbar Mon town market.
Seoung Savuth, deputy police chief of anti-economic crime in the province, said police on Tuesday seized 340 bottles of White Care brand and 78 of Ross brand, all filled with a substance they deemed far from functional shampoo.
Police were tipped off by the owner of Ross, who was concerned that the fake products were washing away the brand’s credibility.
“Ross brand belongs to the Beauty Company, and this is the second time the company has asked police officials to arrest these fake-sellers,” Savuth said.
The same group had been caught selling fake shampoo in Phnom Penh in August, but the company had chosen not to sue them after making their leader promise to stop distributing the faulty product, Savuth said.
He said he could not say whether the company would forgive the suspects this time or ask to have them sent to court.
Savuth added that one of the arrested sellers was the son of the source of the fake shampoo, which he said was imported from Vietnam.
A Beauty Company representative said the company was demanding $5,000 in compensation and asking that the fake shampoo products be destroyed.
