Cambodia's tourism on the up

Cambodia is enjoying a tourism surge, with the Ministry of Tourism's statistics department reporting a 15.4% year-on-year rise in visitors in January.

Overall, the Asian nation welcomed 404,106 travellers in January 2012, up from the 350,257 who came to the country in the same month a year earlier, TR Weekly reports.

Of these, 53.3% came by air, with 35.3% of those landing at Siem Reap and a further 18% heading for Phnom Penh.

Another major entry method was overland transport, with 44.4% of visitors coming through border checkpoints from Thailand, Laos and Vietnam, which are often all visited as part of a south-east Asia tour.

Whichever way people entered, the overwhelming majority (61.5%) headed for the Siem Reap, but the tourism board is keen to attract visitors to other locations to reduce the pressure on the capital.

Top sights in Cambodia include the Angkor Archaeological Park, which contains the famous Temple of Angkor Wat.
