35 Killed in Indian Train Accident

VOA News

Officials in eastern India say a train has plowed into a group of Hindu pilgrims, killing at least 35 people and injuring at least a dozen more.

Authorities say the incident happened Monday morning at a small town's station in Bihar state.

A railway official said the Rajya Rani Express train had been given permission to pass through the station without stopping. Kumar said the accident happened when some people left the platform and went onto the tracks, not far from two other trains that had stopped at the station.

The speeding train eventually came to a stop hundreds of meters beyond the station. Local officials say angry witnesses then severely beat the train's driver and set several coaches on fire in retaliation.
