Is it time for Cambodia to establish better public transportation?

Ros Sopheng, 20, student at Cambodian Mekong University

“I think that better public transportation should be implemented in Cambodia. Not only will it reduce traffic jams, there’ll be more order on the roads, especially in Phnom Penh. I used to travel by public transport when I lived aboard and that was very easy and comfortable. The only downside is an increase of pollution from gas emissions.”

Min Ing, 20, student at Institute of Foreign Language

“Our country should implement a strong public transportation system like Europe’s. The number of vehicles seems to increase daily and the roads are so congested.Gas fumes cause air pollution. Public transport will Cambodians save money in the long run.”

Hang Raksa, 19, student at Royal University of Law and Economics

“I support the idea! If one bus can seat 50 people, that would reduce the number of cars and motorbikes by 50. Having buses and trains will enable people to spend lesser on gas and vehicle purchases.”

Srin Sokmean, 19, student at National University of Management

“If there is public transportation in Cambodia, it will benefit the people greatly. With such a huge population, if each of us owns a motorbike or car, there will be millions of vehicles in the city. This will cause more traffic jams and accidents. Not to mention an increase in air pollution.”

Sophat Chanalya, 19, student at Royal University of Phnom Penh

“I support the idea of better public transportation in Phnom Penh because traffic these days is awful! However, I think that it’s not the right time for the government to allocate so much money on transport. There are currently more important state matters that require financial assistance than public transportation.”
