Sam Rainsy Party to tap new leader

The Sam Rainsy Party is today expected to shed its eponymous leader of 17 years and elect acting president Kong Korm as head.

The reshuffle will allow exiled leader Sam Rainsy and SRP members to vacate the opposition party and join the recently formed National Rescue Party, an amalgamation between the SRP and the Human Rights Party, who joined forces in September.

The SRP congress, meeting in Phnom Penh, will also look at party strategy after the departure of Rainsy, who resigned to lead the new opposition party, SRP  lawmaker Nuth Romdoul said.
