A South African spokesman is denying reports that Nelson Mandela is out of the hospital after being treated for a lung infection.
AP Television reported Friday that a private ambulance believed to be carrying the anti-apartheid icon had left Pretoria's Mediclinic Heart Hospital.
But presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said in a interview with VOA that reports of his discharge are untrue. He refused to reveal Mandela's current location.
Mandela, 94-years-old, was hospitalized last Saturday for a lung infection. Officials have been vague about where he is being treated, sparking some criticism from the South African media. Mandela, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, became South Africa's first black president in 1994.
He has grown frail and has made few public appearances in recent years.
